Opens New High School in 2024

Operated by Kunitachi Kids International School, Tokyo West International School (located in Hachioji City, Tokyo, with Chairman Yoshinori Kato, referred to as TWIS) will establish a high school division starting in the 2024 school year. The new program aims to help students advance to their desired universities in Japan and abroad as quickly as possible, while also focusing on future careers. Students will enjoy onsite school life, including club activities, and receive close support from teachers, including career counseling, to obtain necessary high school graduation qualifications in Japan and the U.S. as quickly as possible.

This system was created with a passion for building a high school that children need for their future. Since its start in April 2010, TWIS has been dedicated to nurturing individuals who can achieve their dreams on the international stage. With the addition of the new high school division, TWIS will provide continuous education from preschool through high school. Leveraging its strengths in bilingual education, the program is designed to help returnee students smoothly transition into high school life. Additionally, it offers a groundbreaking system where international students can earn a U.S. high school diploma using only English.

What Makes TWIS's New High School Unique?

Creating an Educational Environment to Attract Native English Speakers and Bilingual Students

In recent years, many Japanese high schools have introduced international courses. However, due to the constraints of the Japanese education system, most subjects, apart from English, are taught in Japanese. This often results in students not developing practical English skills. Additionally, the use of Japanese as the primary language in class can create a high barrier for native English-speaking students. It’s not uncommon for classes to consist mostly of Japanese students, with teachers being the only exception. This makes it difficult for students to naturally learn English from their peers, along with the cultural nuances that accompany it.

In contrast, TWIS’s high school division plans to incorporate American distance learning programs. This approach is expected to attract more native English-speaking students. By fostering a more diverse student body, TWIS aims to provide an environment where students can learn natural English and its cultural context from each other, creating a more effective and immersive educational experience.

High School Graduation Qualifications

Through collaboration with major correspondence high schools in Japan and the United States, students in the high school division can choose either of the correspondence courses. Alternatively, they can select both courses and obtain high school graduation qualifications from both Japan and the United States.

Correspondence Education for short-term graduation

If a student chooses the American correspondence course and fulfills the required graduation units, they are considered to have completed the high school curriculum in as little as one year. This grants them eligibility to take Japan’s standardized tests and qualify for university entrance (including overseas universities). This is a possibility not offered by other high schools in Japan or other international schools, making it possible for students to advance to university at an accelerated pace.

Comprehensive Career Support Considering the Entire Life Cycle

TWIS has established a Career Center staffed with experts to provide consultation for students aiming to become their ideal selves in the future. This support system includes parents and is designed to assist students throughout their educational journey. Additionally, TWIS plans to actively promote internship programs with companies.

Tailored Education

Tutors provide one-on-one guidance for learning plans and reports tailored to each student’s needs. For university entrance exams, comprehensive support is provided, including subject learning and assistance with exam strategies, all the way to submitting applications.

Daily Commuting Classes and Enriching Extracurricular Activities

The ability to participate in daily commuting classes, including physical education, music, art, and the Garden Project, as well as cultural activities such as club activities, on site sets TWIS apart from correspondence high schools. This allows students to enjoy their school life while engaging in a variety of activities.

Specialized Language Education for Strong English Proficiency

At TWIS, our strength lies in onsite classes that focus on strengthening research fundamentals, English composition, and literary analysis through close reading of literary works. We also emphasize media, linguistics, and creative writing to enhance English proficiency.

Support for Demonstrating English Proficiency

Students can also choose special classes designed to improve their scores in Eiken, TOEFL, and IELTS.
