Ongoing Earthquake Activity in the Tokara Island Chain
Seismic activity continues in the Tokara island region. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, frequent earthquakes have been occurring around Akuseki Island and Kodakarajima in Kagoshima Prefecture since June 21, 2025. As of 5:00 p.m. on July 7, a total of 1,607 earthquakes with a seismic intensity of 1 or higher have been recorded.
As of 2:00 p.m. on July 7, several earthquakes measuring intensity 5 lower or higher have occurred, and the area remains seismically active. The Japan Meteorological Agency warns that further seismic activity is expected and urges caution, noting that earthquakes up to intensity 6 lower could occur in the coming days.
