According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the DONET (Dense Oceanfloor Network System for Earthquakes and Tsunamis) has been installed on the seafloor offshore from Mie Prefecture to Kochi Prefecture to monitor earthquakes and tsunamis in the Nankai Trough. The agency uses this system to issue Emergency Earthquake Alerts.
Due to temporary maintenance work, if an earthquake occurs offshore between Cape Shionomisaki in Wakayama Prefecture and Cape Murotomisaki in Kochi Prefecture on February 3 or 4, the alert may be delayed by up to 13 seconds.
