Shopping cheese at Kagurazaka: Fromagerie Alpage
previous post
Shopping for cheese is no easy mission in Tokyo. When I returned from the U.K., one of the most difficult things to find was good-quality cheese. At ordinary supermarkets, the choice is very limited, and if you go to a department store, imported cheeses are quite pricey. Just 5 minutes from Kagurazaka station, there’s a cheese specialty store, Fromagerie Alpage.
To see Fromagerie Alpage featured in our “Area Guide in Kagurazaka” video, along with other recommended places, please check out the page below.
When passing by the front of the store, you’re immediately greeted by the enticing aroma of cheese. The shop is always bustling with many customers, and we were kindly allowed to take pictures from outside. Even from the exterior, the extensive lineup of cheeses is evident, spanning from France, Switzerland, Denmark, Greece, Italy to Japan. You can find a diverse range of cheeses, including those with fruit pulp, herb-infused varieties, and options that pair well with Japanese sake, champagne, or wine. The owner herself visits local companies across various countries, getting to know the places and people, and procures the cheese from them. You can find updates about this on the official Facebook page.
The cheese made from cows grazing in the Alpine pastures is incredibly flavorful, thanks to the nourishing diet of the cows. Each bite of this cheese brings out its taste even more. Alpage focuses on building relationships with customers, just like the deep flavors found in mountain cheese. The staff members are knowledgeable about cheese and provide excellent advice. When I asked for creamy yet mild options, the staff kindly introduced many flavors and helped me find the best one for me. On Alpage’s official website, you can also purchase their cheeses. It’s definitely a recommended shop for those in Japan who want to explore the world of cheeses.
