Everyone loves Korean culture, and so do I. Wake up with K-pop, check my Instagram for the latest updates from Korean influencers, and make Gilgeori Toast for breakfast while watching the recipe on YouTube. While you may need an airplane to get to Seoul, if you’re in Tokyo, you can explore many excellent restaurants and street food stalls in Shin-Okubo. However, if you’re looking for good Korean books, the place to visit is CHEKCCORI in Jinbocho.
CHEKCCORI , operated by the publishing house CUON, is a little cozy bookstore specializing in Korean literature. With approximately 3500 titles, including Korean novels, poems, essays, picture books, comics, cooking books, art books, and more, it also offers around 500 Japanese books related to Korea and Korean language learning. As you step into the third floor of the building, you will be warmly welcomed with ‘Annyeonghaseyo,’ surrounded by Hangul and a warm atmosphere.
CHEKCCORI was established in 2015 by Kim Seungbok. After graduating from Seoul Institute of the Arts, she enrolled in the Literature Department of Nihon University College of Art. Despite the abundance of books by Japanese authors in Korea, Korean books were not available in Japanese bookstores. With the desire to promote Korean literature, she founded the publishing house CUON in 2007. ‘The New Korean Literature Series,’ which began with ‘The Vegetarian’ by Han Kang, a female writer who won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize, they have supported the Japan debut of various Korean authors. CHEKCCORI not only sells books but also engages in activities that connect many authors with Japanese fans.
Enjoying CHEKCCORI isn’t just about discovering your favorite books. You might also consider participating in the events, which is held once or twice a week. These include events where Korean authors visit, discussions about K-pop, and even translation workshops, offering various ways to enjoy Korean culture from different angles. Check out the latest information here on their official site. Hope you experience enriching moments at CHEKCCORI.
