previous post
Jinbocho is a renowned book town in Tokyo, known to many for its numerous second-hand bookstores, new bookstores, and publishing houses. For cat lovers or families who share this passion, Nyankodo is a bookstore that might pique your interest.

As a cat specialty bookstore, Nyankodo, also known as Anegawa Bookstore from the outside, gives you the feeling that many cats are watching you. Although there are no cats at Nyankodo, the store proudly showcases an extensive collection of over 600 varieties and 2000 volumes of books centered around our beloved furry companions. From guides on cat care, to essays, picture books and art books, dedicated to cats. The store is brimming with a diverse array of cat related literature that may not be easily found in larger bookshops.
When you step into the store, you’ll be warmly greeted by the owner, Mr. Anegawa, who welcomes you with a friendly “Hello, please take your time.” Anegawa Book Store began as a bookstore in Jinbocho. Faced challenges as online bookstores gained popularity. To adapt, Mr. Anegawa decided to specialize the store in an area. His daughter, Yuko Anegawa came up with the idea of focusing on books related to cats. They started with a corner and, within a year, due to its popularity among cat enthusiasts the entire store transformed into a haven, for cat lovers. As they celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2023, the story of this family owned business continues to thrive.
Apart, from selling books, Nyankodo actively supports activities related to cats. They are involved in the “Chiyoda Cat Festival,” an event organized by Chiyoda Ward. The proceeds from this festival are used to cover the expenses of rescued cats and support related causes. Additionally Nyankodo organizes adoption events for rescue cats. Actively participates in the planning committee for “Cat Certification” (known as Neko kentei) which helps people gain knowledge on how to live with cats. In this way Nyankodo goes beyond being a bookstore. Makes significant contributions, to the well being of cats themselves.
