Grand Opening Announcement
Malvern College Tokyo (MCT) held its opening ceremony on December 4th at its campus in Kodaira City, Tokyo, officially declaring the school’s opening in August 2023. Malvern College Tokyo is the seventh overseas campus of Malvern College, a UK-based institution. As the first IB (International Baccalaureate) continuum school in Tokyo under the British brand, it opened its doors at the end of August 2023. In its inaugural year, MCT admitted students from Year 1 to Year 9, with plans to accommodate students from kindergarten to Year 12 by 2027.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures such as Julia Longbottom, the British Ambassador to Japan, Nobel laureate and Stanford University School of Medicine professor Roger Kornberg, Jacqueline So, co-founder and CEO of Malvern College International, and Mike Spencer, the inaugural headmaster of Malvern College Tokyo. Over 300 representatives from politics, education, and business also attended to offer their congratulations.
Ambassador’s Endorsement of International Education
Ambassador Longbottom emphasized the significance of Malvern College Tokyo, stating, “Malvern College Tokyo plays a role in leveraging the strengths of two different cultures and expanding the framework of international education in Japan.” She highlighted the importance of a prestigious British educational institution opening in Japan.
CEO’s Vision for Comprehensive Learning
Jacqueline So, the CEO of Malvern College International, expressed, “The learning environment we provide will not be confined to a mere school; it will become a place that nurtures and inspires children’s international perspectives, entrepreneurial spirit, financial literacy, science, sports, and environmental awareness.” She appealed to the enriching learning environment at MCT.
Scientific Excellence Recognized
Professor Kornberg praised Malvern College Tokyo, stating, “Malvern College Tokyo, with state-of-the-art facilities and well-equipped laboratories, will serve as a hub for scientific inquiry and discovery.” He commended the passion for science education at MCT.
Headmaster’s Closing Remarks on Inclusive Education
In his closing remarks, Headmaster Spencer stated, “Malvern College Tokyo aims to provide students with all the tools and experiences necessary to carve out a bright future. Our academic pursuits, extracurricular activities, and holistic education all adhere to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, promoting comprehensive, equitable, and high-quality education. We strive to advance inclusive, fair, and high-quality education and provide opportunities for all children to continue learning throughout their lives.” He emphasized MCT’s educational policy, which values diversity.
