Here are three camping locations near Tokyo that all opened in 2024 and are accessible within about 2 hours from Tokyo. These sites are well-equipped and may be suitable for camping with your family.

KANUMA Campfield & Spa

This is Snow Peak’s first directly managed campsite in the Kanto region. It opened on April 13, 2024. Located about a 2-hour drive from the Tokyo metropolitan area, it’s a great place for camping near Tokyo. The campsite is well-equipped, allowing you to camp without bringing your own gear and ensuring a safe experience even for beginners or those camping with children.

#1 Location

KANUMA Campfield & Spa is located in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, approximately 100km from the Tokyo metropolitan area, making it about a 2-hour drive by car. The campsite is easily accessible by train, and they offer rental of most camping equipment. From Tokyo Station to the nearest station, Shin-Kanuma Station on the Tobu Nikko Line, the journey takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes. From Shin-Kanuma Station, it’s just a 15-minute taxi ride to the campsite. Situated around the Ooashigawa River, known as one of the clearest streams in the Kanto region.

#2 Types of Plans

In Japan, there are usually two types of campsites: “freestyle sites” (フリーサイト) and designated sites (区画サイト). Freestyle sites allow you to pitch your tent anywhere within a freestyle site area. Designated sites, on the other hand, have pre-defined spaces where you can pitch your tent.

  1. Freestyle Site: Each site can accommodate up to 6 people with 1 tent and 1 tarp as the basic setup.
  2. Designated Site: The designated site size is approximately 12m x 12m.
  3. Designated Site with Power Supply: These sites allow for convenient camping with the ability to park your car next to your site. The designated site size is approximately 12m x 12m.
  4. Mobile House “JYUBAKO”: A special trailer house made by Snow Peak. It offers a comfortable stay with a toilet included.

#3 Unique Features

  1. Rental Equipment Plan: A plan that offers rental of camping essentials (tent, sleeping bag, table and chairs, cooker, kitchen tools, etc.) for ¥49,500 (tax included).
  2. Hot Springs: The facility includes hot springs and a sauna.
  3. Restaurant: The campsite features a restaurant where you can enjoy Japanese noodles and a café where you can enjoy freshly roasted coffee.

Aloha Glamping Resort

Secondly, Aloha Glamping Resort is another newly opened camping spot near Tokyo. It is opening on April 27th. Accessible within about 1 hour from Tokyo, Aloha Glamping Resort offers both cottages and camping sites. The camping sites allow you to park your car right next to them for convenience. Additionally, there is a cottage specifically designed for guests staying with their dogs, equipped with amenities for dogs.

#1 Location

Located in Sakai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, it is a great location for camping near Tokyo, just 60 minutes by car from the metropolitan area. You can also reach it in 90 minutes from Tokyo Station by direct bus, making it easily accessible.

#2 Types of Plans

There are both glamping cottages and campsites available, so you can choose depending on the people you are going with or the season.

  1. Glamping Cottage: A cottage with a Hawaiian-style interior and large, open windows.
  2. Dog Cottage: A cottage with a private dog run. It includes equipments such as dog wet wipes, dog toilet sheets, and a pet toilet box.
  3. Campsite: A campsite with only 12 plots on a 3000㎡ area, ensuring a private space for each plot.

#3 Unique Features

  1. Sauna: A sauna is available on the premises, and you can enjoy it for 50 minutes per session.

  2. Abundant Activities: Near the facility, there is an artificial surfing facility, tennis courts, a kids’ park, and the “Sakai Town Urban Sports Park,” where you can try BMX, skateboarding, and inline skating.

NAGOMI Camp

Nagomi Camp, which opened in April 2024 in Nasu-Shiobara, a cool summer resort area 5°C cooler than Tokyo. You can enjoy both glamping and camping. There are glamping facilities where you can stay with your dog, as well as abundant tourist attractions, allowing you to enjoy both nature and sightseeing.

#1 Location

Located overlooking the vast forests of Nasu-Shiobara, it is approximately a 2-hour drive from Tokyo. Additionally, you can take a bus bound for Shiobara Onsen from JR Tohoku Shinkansen Nasu-Shiobara Station and get off at Agriparu Shiobara. It’s a 15-minute walk from there. This is especially convenient when you prefer not to use a car, such as during the congested summer holiday season.

#2 Types of Plans

Both glamping and camping are available at Nagomi Camp. The glamping area opened first in April 2024, with the camping area scheduled to open shortly after.

  1. Glamping: Limited to 4 groups per day, you can stay in a large dome-shaped tent. BBQ on the terrace is available for all rooms.
  2. Dog Glamping: Dome tents where you can stay with your dog. Amenities for dogs are also provided.
  3. Camping: A forest site limited to a few groups.

#3 Unique Features

  1. Dome-shaped Tents: Stay in a large 6-meter dome tent with big windows, allowing you to enjoy the great nature of Nasu-Shiobara.

  2. Child-Friendly Facilities: Services such as children’s chairs and warming for baby food are provided.

  3. Tourist Attractions: Nearby, there are historic ranch facilities boasting a vast area equivalent to 178 Tokyo Domes, hot spring facilities, and Japan’s longest suspension bridge famous for its autumn leaves. These places offer fun for the whole family.
