The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has decided to ensure that foreign residents moving to Japan enroll in the public pension system. Previously, foreign residents living in Japan would have their enrollment status checked and procedures taken once they reached a certain age. The Japan Pension Service’s system will be upgraded to capture information at the time of immigration and automatically enroll them.
According to sources on the 10th, this initiative aims to start around October 2024. Currently, foreign residents living in Japan are required to join the public pension system. Enrollment requires a notification, but some individuals remain unenrolled. By enforcing enrollment, the ministry aims to promote the payment of pension premiums and stabilize the retirement life of immigrants.
