Since moving to Japan, many people may be eating rice more often. Rice is an important part of daily life in Japan, but its price keeps rising. To address this, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced in February 2025 that it would release stockpiled rice.
In January 2025, the average price of newly harvested rice reached 25,927 yen per 60 kg. This is 10,569 yen (69%) higher than the same month last year and 1,262 yen (5%) higher than the previous month. It is the highest wholesale price since 1990.
These rice prices in Japan were set before the government released stockpiled rice. It is best to keep an eye on price changes and buy rice wisely. Using the Furusato Nozei hometown tax program is a good option. You can choose rice from different regions, and some programs offer regular deliveries.
