The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has decided to strengthen the enrollment of foreign residents in Japan’s public pension system. Previously, foreign residents’ pension enrollment was checked and processed only after reaching a certain age. Now, the Japan Pension Service will upgrade its system to capture information at the time of immigration and automatically enroll eligible foreign residents in the pension service, ensuring smoother and more reliable coverage.
When is it starting?
According to sources on the 10th, the initiative is expected to begin around October 2024. While foreign residents in Japan are currently required to join the public pension system, enrollment depends on individual notifications—resulting in some remaining unenrolled. By enhancing the pension service and enforcing automatic enrollment, the Ministry aims to boost pension premium payments and help ensure a more stable retirement for immigrants in Japan.
