Car inspection in Japan is set to be revised starting April 2025. The new rule aims to ease congestion during peak periods by allowing vehicle owners to complete inspections earlier than before.
In Japan, vehicle inspection is called “shaken” (車検). As in many other countries, it is a mandatory periodic inspection required for vehicle owners. Until now in Japan, shaken had to be conducted “within one month before the expiration date of the current inspection certificate.” However, starting in April 2025, vehicle inspections can be carried out “up to two months before” the expiration date.
This change was made because demand for inspections tends to concentrate at the end of the fiscal year, making it difficult for vehicle owners to book maintenance or inspection appointments during that time. It also creates a heavy workload for auto mechanics, often requiring overtime and work on holidays.
