Japan’s foreign resident population is reaching new heights. The latest data shows a record-breaking increase, driven by factors like the weaker yen and the post-pandemic recovery. More Technical Intern Trainees, International Students, and Specified Skilled Workers are choosing to live in Japan, reflecting a growing demand for opportunities in the country. NHK reports that the number of foreign residents in Japan passed 3.7 million by December last year, reaching a record high. The Immigration Services Agency says that by December 2024, the number rose to about 3.769 million, an increase of 360,000 from December 2023, setting a new record.

By qualification, Technical Intern Trainees increased by 12.8% to 457K, International Students grew by 17.9% to 402K, and Specified Skilled Workers rose by 36.5% to 284K compared to the previous year. Along with tourists, more people seem to be coming to Japan due to the weaker yen and the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
