The first store in Asia

The popular French cafe in Kagurazaka, “Aux Merveilleux de Fred,” is known for its unique confections. Pastry chef Frédéric Vaucamps has created many recipes combining his expertise in meringues, brioche, and more, achieving a balance of lightness and rich flavor. In 1982, the first patisserie opened in northern France in Hazebrouck. Fifteen years later, the specialized “merveilleux” shop opened on Monnaie Street in the old town of Lille, France. They then expanded by opening new stores in Paris, and from 2009 onwards, the expansion covered the entire country of France. In 2020, marking their first venture into Asia, the Kagurazaka store was established.

A Sweet Journey Through French Elegance and History

The term “Merveilleux” refers to a delightful meringue confection, translating to “marvelous” in French. It is a traditional treat with a history spanning over 200 years, predating the French Revolution. During this historical period, young people rebelled against the government through unique fashion, leading to the emergence of a social phenomenon. Men adopting distinctive styles were known as “Incroyables,” while women were called “Merveilleuses,” gathering in salons. Over time, they refined their gatherings, enjoying tea and sweets elegantly while showcasing their distinctive attire.

Influenced by this era, confectioneries incorporated Baroque-style decorations, characterized by the generous use of glass surfaces and gold leaf. Even in Kagurazaka, the ambiance remains striking, featuring large chandeliers imported from France and an open atmosphere enhanced by extensive glass elements.

Artisan Crafted Treats at Their Finest

When you step into the store, you’ll encounter a display of beautiful sweets and skilled artisans crafting each cake and pastry. These artisans meticulously make every sweet, ensuring you can enjoy freshly crafted delights. I tried the “Le Merveilleux.” Its delicately balanced sweetness and lightness pair wonderfully with coffee. Not only are the artisans skilled, but the staff, many of whom are French, make it feel like you’ve stepped into a cafe in the heart of France.
